Full dome production and projector display on the dome

We are discovering a vast difference between the image quality of design and production through rendering phase and projection display on the dome. Our render farm is state-of-the-art, the designers highly skilled. The images are wonderful as displayed on a large computer double flat-screen. When rendered and played back on the dome, they look like totally different images. On the dome, they are darker, fuzzier, less high quality.
While producing full dome shows, has anyone else experienced anything similar to this? If so, was there a solution? Any suggestions from other planetarians as to rectifying this?
